Graduate recruitment in defence could benefit from bust

The number of engineering graduates entering the defence sector has declined for the past five years running, and part of the problems lies with the one-in-three graduates taking their engineering degrees to the City to work as consultants.
However, almost one in five graduate jobs on offer from the Times' top 100 graduate employer list is connected to the defence industry, suggesting how vast the gap is that needs to be filled.
It may be worth graduates remembering that if the expected one per cent downturn in graduate recruitment does indeed occur next year the chances of a vacancy in defence is high.
Other recent graduates in jobs already may be tempted to look for a more stable employer than a private banking firm, in which case the defence industry could once again prove attractive.
