Facebook is to launch a geo-location product called Places.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced the move earlier this week, which could see existing geo-location services such as Foursquare working alongside the social networking behemoth.
The service will initially be rolled out in the US, but will be available on other mobile platforms soon, according to the company.
Mr Zuckerberg told those at the launch conference that the product will allow Facebook users to tell friends where they are; locate nearby friends and find new places and users who have similar interests.
Writing on the Facebook blog, Michael Eyal Sharon said: "If you're like me, when you find a place you really like, you want to tell your friends you're there. Maybe it's a new restaurant, a beautiful hiking trail or an amazing live show."
He also highlighted the new privacy features, which easily allow users to opt out of 'tagging' and having their check-in details displayed to other users.
Foursquare this week updated its privacy features, to allow users to withdraw automatic check in and hide their email addresses.
Users on the site will also be able to decide whether to publish their location information on Twitter or Facebook.
