BBC World News chief resigns

1 October 2008 09:51

Anne Barnard, managing director at BBC World News, has announced she is to step down from her post.

Following nine years with the channel, Ms Barnard has stated that she would like to "refresh, take a bit more personal time, travel a bit and recharge some batteries", it has been announced.

Following 14 years in total at the BBC, Ms Barnard has achieved a lot in terms of overseeing the change in direction of BBC World - as it was known in 2000 when she joined - to BBC World News.

Richard Sambrook, the director of the BBC's Global News division, said: "Anne has made an enormous contribution to the channel in the last ten years and will be greatly missed.

"In particular she has overseen the ongoing commercial development of the channel with revenues more than tripling during this time, and more importantly the halving of our losses in the last four years.

"This now places BBC World News in its strongest position since it was launched."

It has been confirmed that the channel's editorial director, Sian Kevill, will be looking after the channel in place of Ms Barnard.
