Midlands News cuts 120 jobs

27 October 2008 16:56

Midlands News Association (MNA) has announced that it is to cut around 120 jobs in the near future as the company hopes to reduce costs amid a difficult trading period.

Most advertising-reliant media is suffering from the economic downturn at present as industries turn away from speculative spending on marketing.

MNA hopes that cutting 120 jobs will save the company around £3 million per year, coming from the merger of its two biggest titles the Express & Star and Shropshire Star.

A statement from the company explained that voluntary redundancies will be available at the company but that MNA will use compulsory redundancies if the voluntary package fails to gain interest.

"It is hoped that staff savings can be achieved through voluntary redundancies across the group but some compulsory redundancies may be necessary," the statement read.

Merging resources has already been seen this year, after the Telegraph Media Group struck a deal with News International to allow the Daily Telegraph to be printed in full colour at the News International printing plant in Wapping.
