BBC dealt a revenue cut, threatening graduate recruitment

23 July 2008 20:22

The BBC is to miss out on further revenue in the future following a report that found the BBC should not be benefiting from sponsorship of its outdoor events.

Events such as Proms in the Park, which attract thousands of guests, have been the focus of the report from the BBC Trust, which has declared revenues of up to £1.5 million to be stopped in the future.

"The complaints made by ITV and the RadioCentre prompted the management to consider the appropriateness of commercial sponsorship of BBC on-air events in relation to changing market conditions," said BBC management in a statement made to the press.

"In the context of today's findings, the management of the BBC has reviewed its sponsorship policy and has concluded that it should no longer accept sponsorship from commercial bodies for any on-air BBC event."

The decision is a further blow to the revenue of the BBC which is fighting with the government over its licence fee. At present, the BBC is working on a real-term licence fee decrease, due to rises below inflation.

Such cuts to the revenue are likely to spark rumours of recruitment numbers being squeezed, which is all the more important as the broadcaster is a particularly strong graduate employee.
