Internet advertising registered an overall growth of 2,200 per cent in the past decade, according to new figures.
The
Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers reported in its
bi-annual analysis of ad spend that online spend grew every single
year, with a rise of 4.2 per cent last year, despite tougher economic
conditions.
Factors that have driven the growth include more
advertiser confidence, improved broadband and more internet usage among
the UK population.
Sixty two per cent of the UK population has
broadband with speeds faster than 2MB, increasing expectations of high
quality content among users.
The everyday usage of social media
sites has created another avenue for marketers to engage with
hard-to-reach audiences, according to the bi-annual report.
Other
findings included that in 2009 retail and consumer goods spent the most
on online display, demonstrating that marketers are allocating more to
internet advertising.
In total, display was worth £709.3 million
in 2009, showing a one per cent increase in its share of the online
market from 19 per cent in 2008.
