The amount spent online topped £5.1 billion in January, which is a 21 per cent increase on the same month last year, the latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index has revealed.
It was found that the travel sector enjoyed the largest boost in online sales last month, experiencing growth of 31 per cent compared to January 2010.
Purchasing home and gardening products over the internet also became popular in January, as this sector witnessed a 56 per cent increase in sales compared to the same period last year.
Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG, commented: "While the index results for January show a very encouraging start to the year for e-retailers, it is important to note this strong growth is on the back of the lowest-ever annual growth recorded in January last year when the e-retail market grew just 4.6 per cent."
Online shopping was recently named as the second most significant innovation that has contributed the most to Briton's lives over the past decade, a survey by The Foundation revealed.
Home broadband topped the list and Google came third.
