Banking 'still attractive' to graduates

2 October 2008 11:43

Graduates unsure of which industry to take their skills to may be reassured by a recent article detailing the many reasons that still exist which convince graduates to become bankers.

The report, featured in the Independent, was written in conjunction with Ross Hovey, a graduate resourcing manager at the Lloyds TSB Group, and so a cynic may criticise the origins of the article, but the facts are compelling.

"The credit crunch hasn't had a negative effect on employment…financial companies are still recruiting graduates," Mr Hovey said in the report.

And more graduates could be eligible for a position with a bank than is perhaps expected, as Mr Hovey continues: "We want people who are flexible about travelling and working throughout the UK during their training programme.

"Candidates should demonstrate leadership and management potential, problem-solving skills and an ability to influence others.

"We want people who can challenge the status quo in a positive way. Also, while you don’t need to be a maths genius, core numerical skills are important."

Such qualities can be acquired from many more degrees than simply maths or finance, and as such the world of banking could become a popular graduate recruitment option.
