Graduate recruits stressed over work-life balance

28 October 2008 17:25

The latest generation of recent graduates, sometimes referred to as 'Generation Y' are now experiencing a slowing economy for the first time in their working lives, it has been noted recently.

For many this is the first time since graduating in which the work-life balance - a measure which has become a popular way to assess a job's value - is sliding the wrong way, with half of recent graduates now complaining about longer hours, a management-issues.com report suggests.

The UK Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) has found that with such a high proportion of recent entrants unsatisfied by the changes to their jobs, some will still consider quitting despite fears of a recession next year.

Carl Gilleard, AGR chief executive, said: "At a time when many organisations are under financial strain, it is very tempting to let quality slip and to abandon policies such as work-life balance altogether."

Graduate recruitment is expected to drop by only around one per cent next year, with a High Fliers research survey finding that respondents have so far experienced a one per cent drop in recruitment.
