Graduate recruitment under threat in B2B

Trade media publisher Centaur Media has published a double-digit fall in revenue for the four months to October 2008, it has been reported.

Mirroring the wider economic problems faced by the publishing industry, Centaur's figures suggest 2009 will be a particularly tough year for the press as advertising revenue dries up from many sectors.

Reporting that its legal and financial publications were worst-hit, Centaur noted a 16 per cent decline in revenue in the last third of a year, adding that the outlook for some of its magazines was "uncertain".

"We are confident that, during this period of economic turbulence, the fundamental strengths of the group remain unchanged and should provide a measure of resilience during any prolonged period of economic downturn as well as ensuring a foundation for strong growth as our served markets recover," Centaur explained in a trading update.

Business-to-business (B2B) publications regularly attract graduate applicants looking for an alternative to local media jobs, but graduate recruitment is now likely to fluctuate more than normal when comparing sector against sector.
