Royal Wedding dominated social networks

4 May 11 - 12:00AM
The Royal Wedding, which took place at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29th, flooded social networks and Yahoo!

Consumers mentioned the royal event around 67 times per second on Twitter, while Facebook users commented on the big day around 74 times per second.

The Daily Telegraph reports that one million status updates on Facebook mentioned the Royal Wedding, especially when David Beckham entered the abbey.

It was also popular in the US with two million Americans commenting on the event on the social media site.

Joanna Shields, Facebook's vice-president for Europe, told the news provider: "These numbers show the sheer scale of the public's response to the Royal Wedding."

Meanwhile, Yahoo! enjoyed a record day in terms of driving traffic on April 29th.

Over a 24-hour-period, the search engine witnessed 50,000 requests per second about the event and 400 million unique page views.

Online video content was also popular, with Yahoo! driving 27 million consumers to video streams and 2.6 million users to live video streams over the day.

The BBC website was so popular on the day that it experienced technical difficulties, which affected live streaming of the event.
