The average UK consumer spends almost nine hours a day using multiple communication devices, according to new research.
Ofcom's latest report has found that multi-tasking means that the average person crams in nine hours of exchanges into seven.
Findings show that people are spending a quarter of their time social networking and sending four times as many texts per day than they did six years ago.
Marketers could benefit from increased smartphone uptake, which is fuelling the huge rise in communications and multi-tasking.
Researchers found that 20 per cent of media consumption is down to simultaneously surfing the net and taking a phone call.
Younger age groups are behind the trend, with close to a third (29 per cent) performing at least two communications and media activities at the same time.
Despite spending a greater proportion of time communicating, people are also spending less because of the availability of deals.
Overall, household monthly spend on communications services is now only £91.24 – which is nine per cent less than in 2005.
