People in new media jobs have been advised not to rely too much on search to drive revenues as figures show social media is becoming more popular.
The use of social networking has increased four-fold since 2008 and continues to grow in Britain, according to a report from industry analysis firm IMRG.
Data from the study revealed that 48.9 per cent of web users are now visiting social media sites and blogs, with more than half of the UK population going online at least once a day.
"While the figures may not have the search engines quaking in their boots just yet it does suggest to retailers that they need to consider the influence that social media has on consumers' purchasing decisions," IMRG said.
It added: "How we access the internet also continues to change radically. For the first time there is now evidence of the growing importance of internet access via a mobile device."
