Twitter's success is likely to continue for the long-term, claims one media expert.
A report published this month by comScore revealed that in June, nearly 93 million internet users visited the social networking site.
This is an increase of 109 per cent on the previous year, with growth reported in all regions.
Commenting on the findings, Andrew Girdwood of the media consultancy bigmouthmedia said that its popularity with celebrities was driving its success.
"The concept is rock solid. Going forward you'll see it surviving because celebrities have embraced it and are more or less sticking to it, and they're sticking to it because they have direct access, in a very easy way, to their fans."
He added that it is "certainly going to become dominant" though he was not sure whether he would call it "social networking".
ComScore's study found that the fastest growth was in Latin America, with year-on-year growth of 305 per cent.
